Do VR Workouts Work? What the Research Shows

Explore published PowerBeatsVR testing, wider VR exercise research and simple ways to follow the effort and progress in your own sessions.

October 19, 2026 By Five Mind Creations

Hey everyone! Yes—an active VR workout can count as exercise. When you’re punching, dodging and squatting along with a song, your body is doing the work. The useful questions are how demanding that session is for you and how it fits into your routine.

We know people want more than a sweaty screenshot when choosing a fitness app. Here’s the published evidence for PowerBeatsVR, what broader research adds, and a practical way to think about your own sessions.

What was measured in PowerBeatsVR?

The Virtual Reality Institute of Health and Exercise tested PowerBeatsVR in August 2019, using metabolic equipment during Advanced and Expert play. Its rating reports an estimated 7.72–8.59 kcal per minute for a 60 kg reference weight under those conditions.

That is evidence of physically demanding play in the tested sessions. Your body size, movement, difficulty, pauses and platform build can make your experience different. Treat the figure as context for that test, rather than multiplying it into a personal calorie target or a weight-loss forecast.

What does wider VR exercise research say?

A systematic review by Qian, McDonough and Gao found promising physiological, psychological and rehabilitation findings across VR exercise studies. It also highlighted limitations in the quality, quantity and sample sizes of the research.

Those studies used different equipment and populations. They give us useful context for VR exercise as a field; a rehabilitation study or custom resistance setup isn’t a direct test of a consumer PowerBeatsVR workout.

Pay attention to the session you’re having

You don’t need laboratory equipment to start noticing effort. The CDC’s talk-test guidance offers a simple reference: at moderate effort you can generally talk but not sing; at vigorous effort, speaking more than a few words becomes difficult.

Use that alongside how you feel, and choose an appropriate level. Keep active minutes separate from time spent browsing songs or taking breaks. A watch’s calorie estimate can be a rough reference, but sweat, scores and calories aren’t interchangeable measures of fitness.

Build around movement you enjoy

Our part is giving you a music-led workout you can shape. Start with an official session, or generate one from a supported local song. Choose your difficulty and the mix of punching, dodging and squatting, then adjust gradually as you become comfortable.

If that makes cardio more appealing to you, it’s a useful reason to try the format. Keep your wider goals in view too: aerobic activity and progressive strength work serve different purposes, and no app guarantees a particular change in weight or health.

Keep a simple progress note

After a session, record the active time, playlist, settings and a few words about effort. Repeating a familiar session gives you something useful to compare: did it feel more comfortable, did you take fewer breaks, and was it easy to make time for?

For the product setup, our FAQ is ready when you need it. To explore the workout format, visit PowerBeatsVR on Quest or Steam.

Start comfortably, enjoy the music, and build from there.

See you in VR,
